  4. became the mistress of Peter the Great. In
  5. 1703 she was rechristened as Katarina
  6. Alexeievna, and in 1711 the tsar divorced his
  7. wife and married Catherine 1712. She
  8. accompanied him on his campaigns, and showed
  9. tact and shrewdness. In 1724 she was
  10. proclaimed empress, and after Peter's death
  11. 1725 she ruled capably with the help of her
  12. ministers. She allied Russia with Austria and
  13. Spain in an anti-English bloc.
